27.03.2008 Car Tax Discs… WTF?
OK, I’m confused – for the past year or so, the DVLA have been bragging about how they now store all car tax information in their big ole database and will fine you if you’re even a microsecond late to renew your tax. So why is it that even though the information is all stored digitally that they still insist on issuing crappy paper tax discs? The police have instant access to the DVLA database from their cars and the DVLA know if you’re late paying anyway, so what’s the point in wasting tax payers money producing stupid paper discs?
If anyone has any insight, please let me know because I’m confused!

They also seem to require a paper copy of the insurance certificate – which is pointless – these are all recorded electronically, and I could cancel my insurance and still have the paper certificate anyway…
