23.08.2008 Science Confliction…

Good Times!

The SCI-FI channel have announced that there will be a new Stargate series starting in 2009. Entitled Stargate Universe. The show will begin production early next year, and premiere in the summer with a 2 hour movie.

This is how the SCI-FI channel describe the show…

After unlocking the mystery of the Stargate’s ninth chevron, a team of explorers travels to an unmanned starship called the Destiny, launched by The Ancients at the height of their civilization as a grand experiment set in motion, but never completed.

What starts as a simple reconnaissance turns into a never ending mission, as the Stargate Universe crew discovers the ship is unable to return to Earth, and they must now fend for themselves aboard the Destiny.

Unfortunately, this comes hot on the heals of the news that SCIFI are canceling Stargate Atlantis! Following a 2 hour TV movie  in 2009 following the conclusion of series 5.

Bad Times!

That said, I wasn’t the biggest fan of Stargate Atlantis - it had it’s good moments, but I just never really bonded with the characters in the way I did with the SG1 crew. That said, this announcement has spurred me on to get back in the saddle as it where and catch up with the backlog of Atlantis episodes I’ve missed, that is, once I’ve finished working my way through all ten box sets of SG1 !

05.08.2008 On the move

Finally, I’ve been able to hey blog working with the wodpress app for iPhone which is good. The bad news is I’ve had to change hosts to do it.

I’m now hosting with MediaTemple in the USA as my previous host had an annoying restriction on the use of XMLRPC for security purposes.

I actually bought my (mt) VPS for another project, but that’s a couple of months from launch so rather than pay for nothing, I may as well host my blog on it for a while!

Will probably move wifey too at some point…

30.07.2008 iPhone Changed My Life - Musically

You know, I really couldn’t imagine life without my iPhone these days, as well as being a brilliant phone and internet / email device, I think the best thing for me is the fact that I can download a song without having to get up and go to my desktop or open my laptop.

For instance, I hear a song on TV while flicking through the music channels, I can simply whip out the trusty JesusPhone and within minutes, I’ll have downloaded the track onto my phone, ready to synch with my main computer later on.

The bad side is of course, that now I’m buying more music than I used to, simply because buying music is easier when you don’t have to get off your arse to do it.

19.07.2008 WordcampUK - day 1 finished!

Well I don’t know about the other attendees but I’ve had a great day today! This afternoon we’ve had a great session on how blogging and journalism are colliding and a slightly over technical for my liking but still awesome session on using subversion with Wordpress by Automattic staffer Sam Bauers.

However, I really think they saved the best for last with Jonnya’s short n sweet session on how to use Wordpress as a CMS which intoduced me to some awesome techniques and plugins that I was unaware of previously.

19.07.2008 Akismet pronunciation

Finally - I know how to pronounce Akismet properly.

It’s a-kis-met :-)

(For those who don’t know, Akismet is the wordpress anti-spam solution)

19.07.2008 More Wordcamp UK…

Well we’re a couple of sessions in and I’ve learnt a lot! Just had a very interesting SEO talk from the guy at www.sepguy.com which has given me a really interesting insight from an SEO pro point of view.

Just settling down for Wordpress question time now… Should be fun!

19.07.2008 Wordcamp UK 2008

Well here I am at wordcampuk! Just settling down for the first presentation.

I’ve met some great guys already and learnt some new things about wordpress and that’s before it’s even started!

I’m currently sat next to the guy from Automattic trying to drag some info about the new iPhone Wordpress app but he’s keeping schtum so far :-(

15.07.2008 WordPress does a Twitter

It seems that all of the clamouring for the latest version of Wordpress has caused a few problems over at Wordpress.org! I was just on the forum looking for some help with a little post upgrade problem when I saw the above (rather humorous) error message!

I don’t think the site was down for more than a couple of minutes, but there was significant slowdown for a while before the ‘crash’.

Still… at least the guys got it back up and running nice and quick!

15.07.2008 Thank God For Aksimet!

I just upgraded my blog to use Wordpress 2.6 - which, as always was a simple procedure. Today however, I also upgraded the Aksimet plugin using the automatic plugin upgrade feature recently introduced to WP.

While the upgrade was being done, Aksimet was disabled for around 30 seconds - no big deal you may think. However during that 30 seconds 11 spam comments made it into my moderation queue!

If that was a persistant attack it would mean during a 24 hour period I would have to moderate over 3,100 spam comments!

Where would we be without Aksimet?

07.07.2008 Asides…

See that new column over on the right? Those are the ‘asides’. Basically, a collection of handy links that I’ve saved in my del.icio.us account, annotated with a thoughtful comment and tagged with a special keyword (namely ‘asides’) so that it appears here.

Why? Well, I don’t get to blog as much as I like, but I’m always getting sent useful links and this is a nice way to keep fresh content appearing on my site without needing to write in the blog section every other day.

You’ll probably find them most interesting if you’re into webdesign and development because that’s my main focus, but you’ll find other odds and sods from time to time too!

Enjoy!
